Interviewed by Matsumoto Michihiro on NONES.TV

In November I twice had the privilege of being interviewed on NONES.TV by Japan’s most famous simultaneous interpreter, Matsumoto Michihiro, founder of the English Kodokan for bilingual debate (reflecting his Judo background), author of many books on English and Japanese Samurai culture, whose Net TV program features his interpretation of articles from TIME magazine, special guests, lots of humor and lively debate. His conversation is like a tennis volley, and he really keeps you on your toes!

NONES.TV 1

The NONES.TV program is available for viewing only by subscription, but the price is quite reasonable at 500 yen per month, and it provides Japanese people with an alternative bilingual talk show to complement their study of English. My interviews were done in English, and broadcast on Nov 1 and Nov 15, and can be viewed if you sign in as a subscribing member. With my background in Aikido and Matsumoto Sensei’s background in Judo, watch two martial artists have it out in English on the subject of HARA, as well as contemporary issues of the day! We even do a wolf howl together! Enjoy!

NONES.TV 2

For Japanese readers who may wish to subscribe, here is information on how and why you should!

Lessons in Leadership from Deepika

Deepika Bajaj, President and Founder of www.invincibelle.com

Deepika Bajaj, President and Founder of www.invincibelle.com

Meet the Diversity Diva

On a visit to San Francisco in August I had the privilege of meeting a remarkable lady, Deepika Bajaj, President and Founder of Invincibelle, LLC.

Deepika is also one of the founding members of ActiveGarage.com, and I am doubly privileged that this site is host to my Flexible Focus Column on the Mandala Chart.

Deepika impressed me in so many ways, for her confidence, her achievements, her sense of mission, her profoundly relevant thoughts on diversity, for her ability as an entrepreneur succeeding in a country and language different from where she was born, and for her loveliness, truly a Diversity Diva!

Deepika’s new eBook on Leadership

Screen shot 2010-12-03 at 13.06.38

Deepika has just released a new eBook called Pink and Grow Rich: 11 Unreasonable Rules for Success, available on ActiveGarage.com.

The UNREASONABLE Rules in fact make very good sense. But the book goes beyond just these reminders of what we tend to have forgotten to apply in our lives and careers. It also provides quotes that are inspiring examples of the thinking of 24 remarkable women from various nationalities and ethnic backgrounds, who are successful roles models for entrepreneurs of both sexes.

And Deepika has summarized all of this wisdom with 6 Cs of success, that not only tie it all together, but energize you to do something about it.

Pink and Grow Rich: 11 Unreasonable Rules for Success is an engaging read, and the layout and formatting of the book makes it well worth getting.

Well done, Deepika! And all the best in your shining efforts to help others.

Carre MOJI Calligraphy Exhibit Nov 13~14 (Sat~Sun)

Carre MOJI Calligraphy Exhibit Nov 13~14 (Sat~Sun) 11:00~19:00

The annual Carre MOJI Student Exhibition will be held this month at the Carre MOJI Gallery in Omotesando, and I will be exhibiting my recent calligraphy piece shown here.

滝に籠る

暫時は滝に籠るや夏の初め (しばらくはたきにこもるやげのはじめ)
shibarakuwa  takinikomoruya  genohajime

This is from a Haiku Poem by Matsubasho, which in translation reads:

Will stop for a while
Deep inside a waterfall
Beginning of summer

While this Haiku is not really in season, it was the phrase, Deep inside a waterfall, that caught my imagination. The only way to get inside a waterful is to get under it, or at least behind it. And here you experience the power and freshness moment by moment of water in free fall.

I selected this phrase for my calligraphy piece also because the character for 籠 (komoru), which means deep inside, secluded, or confined in, and implying deep immersion, is composed of the radicals for bamboo 竹 and dragon 龍, whereas the character for waterfall is composed of the radicals for water ⺡and dragon 龍, giving the phrase a double-meaning deep inside the dragon.

Dragon is also the symbol of Creative Power, and I was born in the Year of the Dragon (1952).

This work is one of many works which will be displayed at the Carre MOJI Gallery in Omotesando on the weekend of November 13~14. I hope to see you there!

Doug Stevenson is bringing the Story Theater Method to Tokyo!

I just wrote an article about Doug Stevenson on The Power of Story in Business, and Doug will be in Tokyo this month conducting a workshop well worth attending.

The Power of Storytelling in Business -
Using Story in Business to Engage, Influence and Sell

Workshop by Doug Stevenson

Saturday, Nov. 20, 2010; 1 – 5 pm (13:00-17:00)

When your executives, managers, trainers and salespeople make presentations, does their content stick? Do they engage attention in a way that persuades people to see their point of view?

A well-chosen and crafted story is a powerful tool for framing a concept, teaching a lesson or making a point. Just telling a story, however, is not enough. It must be the right story, with the right elements, told in a compelling fashion. That’s where Doug Stevenson’s storytelling technology comes in.

Doug’s Story Theater Method is a fusion of the practical and the theatrical. He will inspire you to be more persuasive in your presentations. Learn how to harness the power of stories to engage, influence, inspire and sell a product, idea or service.

Attend this workshop and learn to:

  • Use stories in business to make a point
  • Inspire and motivate employees
  • Create buy-in for new objectives and projects
  • Convey a new direction or vision
  • Raise funds for new endeavors
  • Sell a product, service or idea

Doug Stevenson is the president of Story Theater International, a speaking, training and consulting company based in Colorado Springs, Colorado, USA.
