BIO
First came to Japan in 1972 as a foreign exchange student at Waseda University, graduating from Earlham College in 1974 with a degree in Japanese Language. Masters Degree in Education from University of Missouri at Columbia in 1977.
After working for several years as a school teacher in Virginia, entered the family business from 1979~1982 working in sales of industrial rubber products. Returned to Japan in 1983 working as a freelance translator. Founded Reed Research, Ltd. in 1989, specializing in translation for the automotive aftermarket. Also worked as an automotive journalist and founded the Japan Office of the Specialty Equipment Market Association (SEMA) in 1998~2002.
Began Aikido in 1972, eventually earning professional rank, and currently hold the rank of 7th-dan, as well as professional teacher certification in Shodo as a brush calligrapher, as well as writing several books on Aikido and Japanese culture.
In 2002 became certified as a Mind Mapping Instructor, and wrote a number one Amazon bestselling book on Mind Mapping in Japanese in 2005. Became certified as a Guerrilla Marketing Master Trainer, conducting training in Creativity and Marketing for Japanese and multinational companies, as well as writing several books in Japanese on creative thinking and marketing. Published 2 bilingual newsletters monthly for 2 years during this time, Will Reed’s MIND MAPPING STRATEGIES and GUERRILLA MARKETING GENIUS. During this time I did numerous speaking and training engagements in Japan as well Australia, Singapore, and the Philippines.
I teach classes and occasionally lecture at several Japanese universities, as a guest lecturer for Okumajuku at Waseda University, as a Nanba Physical Finesse and Tap Dance Instructor at Toho Gakuen College of Music, as a guest lecturer with an eLearning course in Japanology, and Wealth Dynamics for Entrepreneurs at Hitotsubashi University MBA Program.
I continue to write actively as a pro-blogger, and have a syndicated column called Creative Career Path with Daijob.com online and also published weekly in the Daily Yomiuri Newspaper.
Became a member of XL (Extraordinary Lives) in 2007, and certified as a Senior Practitioner in Wealth Dynamics in 2009. Recognizing that the key to marketing was personal branding and communication, I became certified as a World Class Speaking Coach in December 2009, dedicated to helping executives and managers communicate their core message with impact, and influence their teams to support their success.
EXPERIENCE
Interested in Japanese culture from an early age, I came to Japan in 1972 at the age of 20 to embark on a lifetime study of Aikido, Japanese language and culture. Becoming an entrepreneur and starting my own company in 1989, I kept one foot in the world of business, and one foot firmly in the world of training and teaching the martial art of Aikido, as well as actively pursuing a career in writing for business, effectively walking the path of the Renaissance Samurai. Working as a professional translator and with years of public speaking and training in Japanese, I became bilingual and bicultural, as well as dedicated to lifelong improvement investing in ongoing training and certifications in marketing, creativity, speaker training and coaching.
My blog is dedicated to providing insights and tools for Entrepreneurs seeking a Creative Edge through themes of Mastery in Japanese culture to improve personal branding, energy, and awareness.
